The Different Types of
Pediatric Dental Cleanings
At Paseo Ranch Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics we offer the following types of pediatric dental cleaning procedures:
- Prophylaxis dental cleaning
- Scaling and root planing
- Periodontal maintenance cleaning
Prophylaxis
Prophylaxis is the regular cleaning that we provide to the majority of our pediatric patients. Pediatric Prophylaxis involves a thorough exam before the cleaning begins. This will give us an idea of the health of your child’s teeth and gums. Then, Dr. Jensen or one of our highly trained pediatric dentists will carefully remove the plaque and tartar, and all visible stains.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and planing also known as “deep cleaning” is sometimes required when upon examination, the pediatric dentist finds gum disease. If your child’s gums start bleeding while brushing or flossing, this more than likely is evidence of plaque, or that their gums are beginning to recede from their teeth. Deep cleaning, at this point, is recommended and will help prevent your child from getting gum disease. It will also help prevent their teeth from loosening, or before their jawbone is affected.
Periodontal Maintenance
A periodontal maintenance cleaning is for children with evidence of gum disease and who have already undergone scaling and root planing (deep cleaning). It’s almost the same as a regular pediatric dental cleaning but designed to get rid of the bacteria that may lead to gum disease. We recommend this pediatric periodontal maintenance take place every three to four months.
If your child has never had pediatric dental cleaning before, then they may need to begin with this procedure in order to get rid of the plaque and tartar on their teeth.
